Undergraduate Engineer – Special Projects

Job Description

Special Projects is involved with the modification of high performance production vehicles to provide an increased capability and integrated bespoke systems to meet the customer needs and operational requirements. 

The vehicle modifications typically include development and modification to the vehicle body, suspension, interior and electrical systems. Work includes all activities based in a vehicle workshop including complete strip down and rebuilds, design, fabrication and modification of components.

Test, measurement and data acquisition is also conducted to support the development of the vehicle components, systems and the vehicle ride and handling. The range of work varies according to the specific project, from conceptual design for initial prototypes, to development of production components.   All this is done with a team of professionals with vast experience in the automotive arena including  CAD, stress analysis, component life and chassis development all supported by testing and validation on the test tracks of Millbrook Proving Ground.

Roles and Responsibilities

Office based-hands-on experience working on one or more projects alongside experienced Engineers and Technicians, liaising with suppliers, and writing supporting documentation.

Typically the undergraduate can expect to gain knowledge in some of the following areas:

  • Vehicle ride and handling, component design CAD & modelling, test and measurement, Instrumentation, data logging, data analysis, component stress and life calculations, component development, vehicle systems including CAN and Diagnostics.

Essential Criteria

  • Studying for BEng Automotive / Mechanical Degree (preferred)
  • Excellent communication including customer facing skills
  • A good understanding of engineering and motor vehicles in general
  • Ability to use initiative and to problem solve
  • A “can-do” attitude
  • Flexibility in working hours and occasional weekend working
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Meets criteria for obtaining SC clearance (UK resident for the last 5 years and willing to undergo a criminal record and credit reference check)

Other

  • Flexibility to travel as and when required
  • Full UK driving licence
  • SC clearance or ability to achieve this (UK national with residency in the UK for the last 5 years)
  • Willing to undergo a Criminal Disclosure check
